This song started with the bass tone which was directly inspired by the feelings his sound always gave me. My music always starts from a feeling that I then channel into a sound. I in turn mold the sound until I have a song. I also believe we listen to music to help ground us to the emotional state we prefer to be in. Making and sharing music is my way of helping the world ground itself during the tough times the world is experiencing massive changes. Acquiring and maintaining one's composure during these times requires grounding that music helps provide. That is why I'm recording these specific songs. They are my way of helping to calm the spirit to aid in the search for clarity and focus. I find them flavourful as well as restorative. This one was just a rock solid bass and drum pocket with lyrics from my old bandmate Richard Zoppo from Zap \u0026amp; The Wires. I'd made my first solo record in 1980. It was a real psychedelic rock experience. Just as it was building momentum I received an offer to do this R\u0026amp;B gig I couldn't refuse. We wound up opening the opening act on the Jackson's 1981 Triumph tour. It was a wonderful opportunity but after twenty two shows I needed to follow my own creative path which led to my lifelong association with Zap \u0026amp; The Wires and the furtherance of my own sound. Fast forward to modern times where I find myself with my own home studio where I can be prolific. I live in Québec in a small village far from the noise of the city which allows me the quiet space to be in touch with myself. I record daily so much of my music I make alone as you see in this video. I'm playing all of the instruments and Richard wrote the lyrics and helped out with background vocals. The equipment you see in the video is what you're hearing. I've got nothing against AI. My younger brother always wanted to play the bass like our uncle Freddie. He convinced our parents to buy him one for Christmas in 1967. Up to that point I'd had seven years of classical clarinet lessons and he'd been playing flute. On Christmas morning, Santa had brought my brother the bass he'd always dreamt of owning and to my utter surprise, I received an electric guitar which had never crossed my mind. We began lessons immediately and progressed at an extraordinary pace. We played in bands together for many decades. Sadly, my brother became ill and fought for many years until he finally transitioned three years ago on this date, Feb 23, 2023. He had no children and his wife had passed before him. I inherited all of his musical equipment and hard drives of original music. This was a song of his that resonated with me so I recorded my own version faithful to his original demo. Words can't express how close we were. Even when I moved to Canada and he remained in the US we spoke on the phone daily and I would visit as often as I could. He knew he didn't have much time left and he gave me bass lessons for the last year of his life so I could continue the family legacy of bass. As my career began to take off he would drive me to my recording sessions and celebrity events and sit in a corner with a sketch pad and document what was happening. I used to say when I did my first solo album he would have to handle the artwork. When I finally made my album in 1980, Ted Stilles Bhang, he created a work of art that has stood the test of time. A couple of years ago while my younger brother, Ed, was dealing with serious health issues Tony contracted cancer. We tried putting the band back together for one last adventure. Tony wanted me to write a reggae influenced song. Ed and made me step up my game for the bass part and Tony wrote the lyrics and drew the images used in the video. Fast forward many decades and my poet friend, Gregory Schwartz, sent me this poem and that melody from high school came back to me, this time fully formed.
